With the popularity of TV shows such as ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ there has been an explosion of interest in genealogy, otherwise known as the study of family trees. So much so, that USA Today says researching our family history is the second most popular hobby in America after gardening. Research also shows family history websites are the second most visited in the US after those with adult content. It appears that Americans can’t get enough of learning about where they came from.

Compiling a family tree is something all the family gets a kick out of; it’s a little bit of history, a little bit of being a detective, and a whole lot of fun.

Let’s take a look at some of the best places to research and compile your family tree.

Ancestry.com

This is probably the daddy of all the genealogy websites. It’s been around for some time, and is linked with the TV show Who Do You Think You Are? The pay site provides access to a wide range of genealogy tools, and the ability to create a family tree that can be shared with other family members and friends.

The site gives users the ability to search databases for births deaths and marriages all over the globe. It allows access to records not just in English speaking countries, but some in Europe too. This helps with tracking families that have emigrated or been disrupted by war or conflict. As users research data can be added to a tree to give a complete picture of a family history and the story that goes behind it.

MyHeritage.com

For anyone starting out researching the family history, MyHeritage.com has lots of search criteria and a simple free tool to create a family tree of up to 250 people. The free limit of 250 people is usually enough for most people to get started and go back at least three or four generations or even further.

When researching this article, I tried to compile my family tree. With the names of just my parents and grandparents, the family compiler managed to create a tree with more than fifty relatives going back six generations to 1792. The tree compiler can give tantalizing glimpses of unknown relatives too. The database can search to see if any of your relatives appear in other family trees. The owners of those trees can be contacted through the site so trees can be linked and expanded.

FamilySearch.org

Run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, otherwise known as the Mormon Church, the website offers a wide range of documents as part of the search tools for creating a family tree. As part of the Mormon beliefs, the church has been painstakingly gathering and preserving family documents and records from all over the world.

The church has been imaging and digitizing papers for decades to preserve the past, and make it open for people to search and discover. As the world’s largest genealogical organization FamilySearch.org has been compiling data for more than a hundred years and is digitizing tens of millions of records every week.

FindMyPast.com

Creating a family tree on FindMyPast.com is very similar to the other sites. The starting off point is your details and those of your parents and grandparents. With details of their names and possible place of birth and date of birth, the compiler automatically creates a simple family tree. Further research requires a login for the pay site, although there is a 14-day free period as a trial.

FamilyEcho.com

For anyone that has already done some research, FamilyEcho.com helps you create a family tree for free to share with other relatives. There is no automated input of data into the family tree, and it all has to be done manually. However, that is often part of the fun of creating your own genealogy.

FamilyTreeNow.com

For those in the United States, FamilyTreeNow.com offers a free family tree service. Users can create an account with the name and place the person was born within the United States. The research material and databases included on the site are free to use.

Geni.com

Another of the pay sites is Geni.com. It offers similar family tree creating tools as many of the others, and has an annual subscription for the PRO version.

The exposed back zipper also makes this dress more modern and perfect for any young graduate. If you don’t like the dress in black, you can also get it in a nice off-white shade. We love the look of a midi dress and think it is the perfect, sophisticated way to look on your graduation day. Like with the previous dress, the fitted nature makes this dress more bold and sexy, but the high neckline and sleeves keeps it conservative. We love this deep emerald color and think it would be great to wear for a winter graduation. If you don’t love the green, you can also get this dress in a deep red shade or a nude shade. This is a classic, sophisticated dress that will make you look mature, but not too mature!

The midi length ensures you won’t show too much skin, which is helpful if you are graduating when temperatures will be a bit on the chilly side. Wear with a nice pair of heels and you will absolutely be best dressed at your graduation, no questions asked!

Sandra Darren Knit Dress

Made from a heavier material that will keep you warm, this is a great dress that is practical, but also not short on style. The dress has ¾ sleeves which helps the dress not look too heavy, and the shorter length also gives it a fresh look. Concerned about the cold? Wear this dress with stockings or tights to have you protected from head to toe!

We love that this is also a wrap dress and love that the waist tie will help define your waist, something that is important with heavier fabrics that can make you look wide. The beautiful jewel cool tones of this dress make it a perfect dress to wear in winter, and we know it would make for the perfect graduation dress. Best of all, it’s also comfortable! Style and comfort- what a great combination!

If you don’t want a solid color, you can also get this dress in a beautiful blue and white pattern geometric pattern. Either way, this is a classic style dress that is perfect for graduation. Plus, it is completely stretchy and doesn’t have a zipper, making it completely comfortable in addition to being stylish. We love it!

We look a good jacquard print and this dress has just that in a beautiful fit and flare silhouette. Because it is sleeveless this would make a great spring graduation dress, and we love the black detailing at the neckline. Black and white is a timeless color combination and is perfect to wear any time of year, including graduation.

The knit fabric makes this dress look very expensive, but you are in luck because it isn’t! Pair with a nice pair of heels or wedges for a gorgeous graduation look that is completely timeless. You will look back at pictures for years to come and be so glad you went with a dress like this one! This is also great if you don’t want to wear something fitted but still want to have a mature look. Fit and flare dresses can sometimes look a little ‘young’ but not this dress!

Julian Taylor Printed Fit and Flare Cutout Dress

Julian Taylor Women's Sleeveless Stripe Printed Fit and Flare Cutout Dress

For a spring or summer graduation dress that is fun and youthful and fresh, we absolutely love this gorgeous blue and green fit and flare dress! The small cutout is interesting but not overly revealing, making this an appropriate dress to wear for graduation. It is sleeveless and knee length, perfect for those hot spring or summer graduation days! The fabric is a really unique print and we love the color palette with the blues greens and just a touch of white. You can easily dress this graduation dress up with heels, or make it more of a casual look with flats, which makes it more versatile than some of the other dresses on this list.

If you want something more bright and fun for your graduation dress (and why not- after all it is a celebration!) this is a great option that we totally love.

Lark & Ro Women’s Flutter Cuff Shift Dress

Finally, if you love a classic LBD but want to step it up just a notch or two for your graduation, we love this flared sleeve shift dress! Available in two colors- black, and a deep purple (very similar shades) this is a wonderful modern take on the classic black sheath dress. The long sleeves taper out for a really fun look- it’s like bell bottoms for your arms! There is also a minor high-low hem with this dress, which makes it just that little bit more modern as well.

Overall, it is a fun dress that you could wear for a summer or winter graduation. Add some jewelry like a bold necklace or drop earrings, pair with heels, and you have a really unique, yet sophisticated look! While it is shorter in length, the long sleeves and high neckline keep it appropriate and it doesn’t look like a revealing dress at all. Perfect for graduation!

Wrapping Up

So there you have it! What do you think? All of these dresses are so gorgeous and totally appropriate to wear to your graduation. Whether you want something looser, more tight fitting, brighter colors, or something more muted, there is something on this list. No matter your style, you can look like yourself, feel great, and most importantly, stay on budget!

Our Favorite Picks from the Olive Garden Menu!

Choosing the right place to go for dinner can sometimes be tricky! There are so many options today, how do you make the right pick for a perfect meal? Whether it is a Friday night date night, or a Sunday lunch with family, or a spontaneous Wednesday lunch with a friend, you can’t go wrong with Olive Garden.

Yes, Olive Garden! From the delicious salads and breadsticks (yum, we have dreams about the breadsticks) to their creamy pastas and savory soups, there is something for everyone. Italian food is a favorite for most people, and combined with a variety of options, this is a perfect restaurant choice no matter your company!

Did you go to Olive Garden growing up? Maybe that is where you went for your birthday, or to celebrate your graduation. It is a popular restaurant, and for good reason! If you haven’t been in a while, it may be time to head back to the family focused restaurant. You’ve heard the commercials – when you’re here, you’re family!

We have looked over their latest menu and had the (incredibly difficult) job of picking the best picks. While everything is good, there are some solid choices that you cannot miss out on! From the best starters and entrees, to the best desserts and more, here is what you need the next time you head out for lunch or dinner!

To Share: Lasagna Fritta

Naturally you will start your meal with salad and breadsticks. That is a given! And trust us, you never want to turn down their salad and breadsticks. However, you might want a little something else to share with friends and family! Our choice for the best appetizer is their lasagna fritta. Even the name is fun!

lasagna fritta

Let’s face it – fried food is delicious. It just is! And have you ever thought to fry your lasagna? Genius! What we love is that this is a starter so you aren’t going to have a huge portion of it. If you try to limit your fried foods but need to satisfy that craving every once and a while, this is a great way to do it.

The start is simple – Olive Garden takes its classic lasagna (which you can never go wrong with) and breads and deep fries it. I mean come on- that is a recipe for success! We love this starter and sometimes find it hard to share- oops! This is a great way to start your meal and a real favorite of ours that we can’t ever seem to resist.

To Start: Zuppa Toscana

zuppa toscana

You could dive right into your entree, but why, when Olive Garden is known for having some of the most amazing soups! In particular, their zuppa toscana is a real fan favorite. Seriously, we could probably easily down a gallon of this soup. It is just so delicious!

A creamy potato based soup, this also has kale (so hey- it’s healthy!) red pepper flakes, onion, bacon, and sausage in it. We can’t think of a better ingredient list for a delicious, creamy, hearty soup.

Overall we find that this soup isn’t super heavy (souper?) and is still a great way to start your lunch or dinner without completely ruining your appetite. And pro tip- dip your breadsticks in this soup for a delicious flavor combination that will totally change your world!

You could easily stop here and be happy, but there is so much more to explore on this menu!

To Savor: Tour of Italy

Now for our choice for the best main entree – it is their Tour of Italy! Do you have trouble making decisions? Then don’t make any! We love that this entree allows you to try out some of Olive Gardens fan favorite dishes. We simply couldn’t pick a favorite, and clearly we were not alone. This is not just a smart marketing tactic, it is a wonderful addition to the menu that we recommend to anyone!

Tour of Italy

The Tour of Italy allows you to sample their chicken parmigiana, lasagna, and their fettuccine alfredo. Each unique, this is a great sampler entree that allows you to taste so many great items – their delicious breaded chicken, famous lasagna, and classic pasta with alfredo.

If you don’t come to Olive Garden often (or let’s be honest even if you do) this is a great pick as you get to really sample some of Olive Garden’s best food! Our mouth is watering just thinking about it!

To Finish: Zeppoli

zeppoli

You can’t stop now! We also picked out Olive Garden’s best dessert, and man is it excellent. Their zeppoli dessert is basically an Italian doughnut. Similar to world famous beignets, these zeppolis are absolutely delicious. This is a great dessert to order for the entire table, although we won’t judge if you end up eating all of them yourself!

Deep fried dough covered in sugar. Need we say more? We don’t- but we will! This dessert also comes with a delicious side of chocolate sauce to dip them in. Personally, we love eating them on their own, but the sauce is a great addition that plenty of people will love to use to top off their sugary treat.

If you’ve eaten everything on this list you are sure to be pretty full by this point, but trust us, saving at least a little room for dessert is totally worth it! Plus, you can always take your leftovers home and enjoy them for lunch or dinner the next day!

Bonus: Create Your Own Pasta

create your own pasta

We had to include Olive Garden’s Create Your Own Pasta on our best of list because we really love having the option of building the perfect pasta dish! With this option you can pick your noodles, sauce, and any meat you want to add. If you are a picky eater this is an excellent option for you, as you can craft the perfect dish that you will enjoy eating! Not to mention, everything on the list is delicious, so you really can’t go wrong! From red sauces, to creamier sauces, to lighter sauces for those on a diet, there really is something for everyone. We love it!

Wrapping Up

Are you already out the door on your way to Olive Garden? We don’t blame you! Their delicious food options make it one of the best restaurants to take the family (or to just take yourself!) Whether you fill up on salad and breadsticks, have an endless amount of soup or pasta, or if you are lucky enough to save some room for dessert, you are sure to leave feeling completely satisfied.

Which is your favorite item off the menu? Did we leave anything off that deserves some recognition?

The Easiest Handmade Gift Ideas to DIY

Are you feeling a little crafty? While going out and purchasing a gift is great, sometimes it is even better to get your hands dirty and make something yourself! Best of all, DIY projects are fun, personal, and really do make for great gifts.

DIY projects are also great if you have children and want to get them involved. Perfect to do as a weekend project, or for those rainy days when you have to stay inside, DIY is always tons of fun! Best of all, there are plenty of easy ideas to choose from that won’t have you tearing apart your house, or spending a lot of time.

With a little creativity and some time, you can create an excellent handmade gift that works great for a Christmas party, housewarming gift, white elephant gift, or even as a sympathy gift. There really isn’t an occasion where a handmade gift isn’t appropriate! These gifts are also great to give as a thank you gift say for a special nurse or doctor, or a teacher at your child’s school.

If you aren’t very creative, or you just have run out of ideas on what to make next, you’ve come to the right place! We have found some of the easiest, but best looking, handmade gift ideas that are completely DIY. If there is a party or holiday coming up, check out this list and see if there is something here you want to consider making. It is sure to be an absolute hit!

1. Rock Picture Holders

Rock Picture Holders

Do you know someone who loves taking polaroid pictures? They have really made a comeback! Even though social media seems to dominate today’s world, plenty of people enjoy having their photos actually printed. Once they are printed the problem becomes – where to display them? That is where this fun DIY project comes in!

With this project, there are only 3 main items that you need- rocks, wire, and paint! That’s it! If you want to go more rustic, simply head outside and find some decent sized rocks to use. If you want to create a more sleek looking gift, go to your local craft store to purchase some smoother rocks. Use your creativity to paint them however you want. Are you gifting these over the holidays? Paint them red and green! Or, for other occasions, pick other solid colors, or go crazy and do multiple colors! What is great about this project is that it is very open to interpretation.

If you are doing this with your kids (perhaps to make a photo holder to give to dad for Father’s Day?) let them each paint their own rock however they want. You can paint your own as well! Next, all you need to do is get some wire (we like the look of copper wire and it is easy to work with), and wrap it around the rock a few times.

wire

The end of the wire is where your picture will go- to make a nice tight loop, consider wrapping it around a marker and wrap it at least twice so that a picture can easily be wedged in between the loops. Use some pliers to cut off the wire and that’s it! Simple, easy, and it makes for such a great gift! These holders look great almost anywhere- at home, or at work on your desk!

2. Watercolored/Marbled Mugs

watercolor mugs

This might be our favorite DIY project- the end result is so beautiful and it seriously looks like you spent a lot of money on these mugs! Perfect for anyone who enjoys a nice cup of coffee in the morning (or afternoon, or evening…we don’t judge) this is a wonderful gift to get them. This is also great for tea drinkers!

plain mugs

Get It Here

Best of all, you probably already have the main item needed to make the color – it’s nail polish! Yes, seriously! Go out and purchase a plain mug that you will use to color. This is easy to find at almost any major store like Target or Walmart. You will also need a container to dip the mug in, so either purchase a new one that you don’t mind staining, or use an old one that you were planning to get rid of anyways.

All you have to do for this project is fill up the container with warm water. Make sure you don’t fill it up too much- you don’t want it spilling over the side when you dip the mug in. Next, get your nail polish and put in a few drops. You could do just one color, but we recommend doing at least two to get a really nice marbleized look to your design. You don’t need to use a lot! A few drops of each will do.

You might need to swirl the nail polish a little bit, using something like a straw or skewer to lightly start to mix the polish. Don’t spend too much time, though! Grab your mug and dip and swirl it around where the nail polish is. This is where you get to be creative! You can keep the color focused on one area of the mug, or spread it around and cover more of the entire mug. Do what you like! We recommend leaving at least part of the rim free from polish so that whoever drinks from the mug doesn’t have to come in contact with the polish. Looks great, not for eating!

nail polish set

Get It Here

When you are finished, remove the mug and place it on a paper towel and don’t touch it! Let it completely dry before picking it up. That’s it!

This is a great, quick project that kids will absolutely love helping out with as well. The end result are some seriously cool looking mugs- you might just keep one for yourself!

3. Bath Bombs

diy bath boms

Who doesn’t love bath bombs?! The last couple of years they have become all the rage, but the truth is, they can be sort of pricey to buy from the store! Plus, when you buy them, you don’t get to experience the fun of making them yourself (which includes picking your favorite scent which we love).

Believe it or not this is a fairly easy project, even though it requires a few more ingredients than the other projects. Either way, it is a great DIY project, tons of fun, smells great, and makes for an excellent gift! Perfect to give out at a birthday party, or for a bridal shower or bachelorette party.

Here is the best ‘recipe’ to make beautiful, delicious smelling bath bombs!

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces baking soda
  • 4 ounces epsom salt
  • 4 ounces corn starch
  • 4 ounces citric acid
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 teaspoons essential oil (pick the scent you like best!)
  • 4 drops food coloring (again, pick the color you like best!)
  • Dried flower petals (optional, but they add a nice touch!)

Steps

First mix the baking soda, epsom salt, corn starch, and citric acid together in a large bowl. If you have dried flower petals you can add them at this stage as well.

Next, mix together your wet ingredients in a separate bowl (that would be the coconut oil, water, essential oil, and food coloring).

Now for the fun part! Slowly add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and start incorporating them. If it starts fizzing too much, slow down! We want to save all the fizzing for in the bath!

Transfer the mixture into silicone molds. This recipe will make around 10-12 bath bombs so make sure you have enough. Work quickly so that the mixture doesn’t dry out before you’ve formed the bombs!

Let them totally dry, and that’s it! You can now package them up and give them out as presents. Truly a great gift that makes for an even greater, relaxing bath experience!

4. Bead Bracelets

diy bead bracelets

It wouldn’t feel right to have a DIY list without the classic project, bead bracelets! Maybe you made some as kids, but they are always a fun project that still make for a great gift. Best of all, these bead bracelets are fun to mix and match and stack, which is a very popular jewelry trend these days! For a trendy, fun gift that your kids can help with, bead bracelets are the way to go!

beads set

Get It Here

For this project you will need stretch cord, beads, and some type of glue to hold it together. We recommend something like hot glue and not elmers glue. First you will want to cut a piece of the cord that is going to be the right size for a bracelet. Use someone’s wrist as an actual guide to make sure you get it right! Tie a knot at one end (leave a little extra) and start adding your beads! Add whatever type of beads you want- do all one color, or mix it up. The choice is yours! Have fun!

stretch cord

Get It Here

Once you have strung all your beads (leave some space at the other end) you will tie the entire bracelet in a knot to make the loop. We suggest adding some type of glue to really secure the knot in place, as well as tying several knots if you can so that the bracelet is super secure. That’s it! This project really couldn’t be easier, but the end result is a really nice looking piece of jewelry that makes for a great gift!

Wrapping Up

There you have it! These are some of the easiest DIY projects out there, but they result in some beautiful pieces that make for excellent gifts! These don’t take much time, but their impact is huge! Which project will you tackle first?

Our favorite gifts under 10$: September edition

Gift giving is part of every culture, the Bible talks about how it is better to give than receive, and that is true the world over. Have you ever asked yourself why we give gifts? What motivates us to give someone a present? Well, yes it’s often to recognize the recipient has done something worth marking, and a small gift is an obvious choice. However, psychologists have studied gift giving and come up with some interesting conclusions, which some may find enlightening. They looked at what is the underlying reason for giving a gift. It appears that in the vast majority of cases, at the point of handing over a gift, the giver simply wants to see a smile on the face of the recipient. I guess this is why we always like to surprise people when giving them a gift.
On the other hand, the recipient doesn’t care much about smiling and is more interested in how useful the gift will be and how they will get a chance to use it. I would take the art of gift giving a step further, and say the best gifts are those the recipient will use, but never thought to buy for themselves. With that in mind here are ten gift ideas for under $10 that will bring a smile to the recipients face, and be useful.
ELFRhino Silicone Earphone Organiser
There’s not a day goes by that I don’t have to untangle the cord of my earbuds. Like most people, I’m pretty lazy about these things and just stuff the earbuds into my pocket when not using them. Unfortunately, they come out a mess, tangled into a knot that can take minutes to sort out. This little organizer is the perfect solution to never having to worry about tangled cords again. The snap closure means that once the cable is wrapped around the organizer, there is no way it will dislodge and will be easy to unwind when you pull it out of your pocket.
Just Crunch Anti-Soggy Cereal Bowl
Lots of people love cereal for their breakfast, biting into the crunchy flakes helps to start off the day. What they can’t abide is when the cereal gets too soggy with milk, and the crunch becomes a munch. The question is how to keep the crunchy cereal away from the milk long enough, so the crunch still stays. The traditional bowl means you pour in the cereal and then the milk and the two sit together while you eat. The first mouthful will be crunchy, but the last can be nothing more than a milky mush. Well, the Just Crunch cereal bowl allows the last bite to be just as crunchy as the first by having a divider down the middle of the bowl keeping the milk and cereal separate until you want to combine them. It can work just as well for dips and nachos, or Oreos and milk.
Chateau Spill Red Wine Stain Remover
There’s nothing worse than getting a red wine stain on your clothes or furnishings. If it’s not dealt with straight away, it will linger for literally years. The Chateau Spill red wine stain remover comes in a handy 4oz size that can be carried almost anywhere. It can remove red wine, berry juice, makeup and lots of other organic stains without resorting to peroxide, phosphates, or chlorine bleach. The product was first developed to remove stains from the hands of laboratory staff. The proprietary formula uses unique chemistry to break down the pigments at the cellular level. This easily removes red wine stains without damaging fabrics or harming the skin. Once you have a spill, the excess liquid needs to be blotted away, and then the stain moistened with cold water. A small amount of Chateau Spill can be sprayed on the area and then either sponge and rinse the affected area, or launder the item of clothing. Chateau Spill works best on fresh stains but is also effective on older marks.
Alfamo Cooling Towel
Anybody who plays any kind of sports or who works out at the gym can tell you how important it is to cool down after strenuous exercise. This mesh towel uses super absorbent fiber technology to work as an air conditioning system for your skin. To activate the towel is so simple. It needs to be soaked in water and then wrung out and snapped. This gets the chill effect going, and it will stay cool for up to three hours and can lower the body temperature by up to 30 degrees. At 40 inches long and 12 inches wide it is ideal to tie as a neck wrap or a bandana and can work as a sunscreen as it is UPF 50.
Pocket Flyers Paper Airplane Book
You want to keep the kids amused with something other than a video game on their iPad, and also spark their imagination? This little book is a steal at less than ten bucks and offers hours of fun for children of all ages, and adults too. There are simple to follow instructions to create 69 planes from twelve different models. The authors have given their creations names like Skyhawk, Saber, and Concorde 500, to link them to real-life airplanes. Each paper plane has its own special flying characteristics from looping and diving to high-speed flight. The book contains plenty of tips to maximize the performance of your paper plane.
Wondermade Beer Artisan Marshmallows
If you have a friend, who likes to go camping or have backyard cookouts what better gift for them than something to sweeten the experience. These handmade marshmallows are made with beer and sweetened with vanilla extract and finished by rolling in crushed pretzels. Each packet contains sixteen bite size marshmallow pieces, just right for making an adult version of s’mores!
Travelon Floating Waterproof Smartphone/Digital Camera Pouch
When traveling there is always a concern about keeping your digital equipment safe, whether it’s a smartphone, camera, or music player. If you’re on vacation by the sea or pool, the last thing you want is to get it wet. This pouch can fit almost all the pocket digital cameras and smartphones currently on the market. The soft surface means you can control the device while it is inside the waterproof pouch. With the handy lanyard to put around your neck, your precious electronic device can be kept safely away from water, and still easily reachable.
Architec Recipe Rock, Flat Black, Magnetic Recipe Holder
You will probably know someone who loves cooking and discovering recipes online as most of us do these days. It’s not so comfortable reading a recipe from a tablet or computer screen when doing the cooking, so we usually print the recipe on a couple of pieces of paper. However, the same problem applies, how to read the recipe and not get it covered with grease marks and still have it handily displayed. The Architec Recipe Rock solves the problem imaginatively. The magnetic ball and base can hold up to eight sheets of paper in place and the gentle curve means the sheets won’t fold over and droop. It’s much more compact and easier to store than a regular recipe book stand.
SEYEON UV Sterilizer Motion Sensor Toilet Night Light
When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go, even in the middle of the night. But, switching on lights to go to the bathroom can be disturbing to your partner, especially if you have to pay a visit regularly. This battery powered device directly attaches to the toilet bowl and movement sensors will switch on the LED nightlights when someone enters the darkened bathroom. The light has sixteen color options, and when it goes out an ultraviolet light will disinfect the toilet bowl when you have finished doing your business. Aromatherapy tablets are also included to enhance the smell and purify the air in the bathroom. Each tablet can last up to three months. Three AAA batteries, which are not included with the product, can keep it powered for up to ten months depending upon use.
Toysmith Day At The Beach
Although this is designed with small kids in mind, it can be just as much fun for ‘big kids’ too. The set includes everything you need for an imaginary beach vacation, a chair, sunshade, flotation ring, beach ball, sandals and its own sandy shore. With lots of small parts, it’s not recommended for children under three years of age. It also makes a great desk ornament for anyone you know who is always dreaming of a summer vacation on a tropical island.

What to get as a souvenir? We got a list and it’s not your usual fridge magnets!

For some people, it’s become a vacation ritual, picking up some small item as a souvenir to give to friends and family when you get back home. The tradition goes back to the 19th century, when travelers and people on vacation would send postcards home, and bring back little presents from the places they visited.
Whatever souvenir you decide to bring back from your vacation, here are a few simple rules to follow.
Don’t Buy At The Airport
The merchandise available at airports falls into two categories, the stuff you can get at any airport around the world, and items branded with that location. Neither of these are souvenirs. The only good deal you will get at the airport is duty-free alcohol and perfumes, which are hardly souvenirs.
Keep Away From Kitsch
There are some people who do like fridge magnets, and mugs, but most people regard them as thoughtless impulse buys. So, if you want to keep your friends best not offer something like this as a souvenir of your holiday.
Hearty Eats
You can never go wrong with specialty food or booze from the region you have visited. You are bringing something home that is part of the local culture. These special delicacies such as jams and liqueurs are tasty reminders of your travels, and show you have thought about the souvenirs you are bringing back.
You Can’t Fight Fashion
Home décor items or small pieces of fashionable clothing, make great souvenirs. When away on vacation we all love spending time browsing through small boutiques full of artisan-crafted merchandise. You never know what you might find. With so many international stores, it’s great to find something designer and different.
OK, so now it’s time to get creative, and suggest some types of souvenirs that aren’t going to break the bank and at the same time are going to surprise the recipient.
Look for the Unique
Wherever you travel in the world your destination will be famous for something. For instance, Venice in Italy is famous for glass, Burges in Belgium for lace, or Scotland for tartan fabric. If you buy something straight from the maker, you are often going to get a better bargain, and you are supporting local artisans. Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s made locally, and not been imported for the tourist trade
Look for Something Practical
Look out for everyday items that are a little different or better than you can get at home. A gift that is practical is a constant reminder, and you know will get used and not stuck in the back of a drawer and forgotten.
Something natural
There are lots of national and international laws about taking items from nature as souvenirs, no matter how pretty they may be, don’t even think of putting them in your suitcase as a holiday memento. Try to look for natural products made from sustainable specialities of the region you are visiting. Beauty and bath products come to mind, as well as local delicacies.
Textiles
Most areas of the world have their own specific textiles or designs, and a small piece such as a handkerchief or table center makes a unique personal gift. Anything made of linen has as the advantages of being easy to fold and lightweight.
Money, Money, Money
It used to be that every country in the world had it’s own currency, and bank notes and coins could be colorful and artistic gifts. I once remember bringing back a ½ Quetzal note from Guatemala as a souvenir, the oddest bank note I have ever come across.
One Man’s Trash
The stuff locals would normally throw away, such as ticket stubs are just the thing to bring back memories as free souvenirs. OK, so your friends won’t appreciate being given a beer coaster as a souvenir of your holiday, but they do make a great addition to a personal scrapbook of your travels.
Food for Thought
A taste of your travels is always a great way to mark a vacation. Edible souvenirs can be are one way of bringing a culture home with you to share with your friends and family. The United States and other countries do have strict rules on what sort of foodstuffs you can bring through customs, however you are not likely to go wrong with items such as wine, spirits, olive oil, tea or coffee. Take time out during your travels to visit a local supermarket and discover some local delicacy you have never seen at home. If you don’t want to take the risk of importing something illegal, why not pick up a local cookbook, so you can create your holiday cuisine in your kitchen.
Play the Music
Traveling in different countries you get exposed to local music, both traditional and pop. There’s invariably a summer hit playing in all the bars and clubs. Why not bring some of the music home with you for any friends who like a to listen to new things.
Art for All
Small paintings or pieces of art make great souvenirs for you and your friends. Bringing back something to adorn a wall is a constant reminder of happy times away, or an incentive to visit. Drawings and sketches can be easily packed. If you have a friend who is into history why not make a rubbing of an interesting gravestone or monument as a truly personal vacation present.
Collectibles
You may have friends who are great collectors, then why not try and add something to their collection from your vacation destination. A little thought before you go away, will make your gift some much more memorable.

We all like bringing souvenirs back home from our travels to remind us of the places we visited.
In today’s economy and easy access to the world, one thing that’s sure changed for the worse is authenticity. When was the last time you saw something new and interesting in a souvenir shop which you couldn’t buy in all souvenir shops in all the other places you’ve visited?
From t-shirts to wooden figures, from ceramics to refrigerator magnets, you can find the same souvenirs in every corner of the world. Sometimes it’s only the name of the place where you buy them that’s changing. These are the kind of souvenirs which end collecting dust in some corner of your home or even in the basement.
What’s the point of finding, buying and displaying something, which is unauthentic, cheaply made and overpriced? Or even worse, wearing it? Did you see those disgusted looks the last time you wore an “I [heart] some-touristy-place” neon t-shirt?
After making your mistakes in choosing souvenirs several times myself, I’ve managed to learn from them and have gathered some amazing souvenir ideas, which I’m now going to share with you!
Souvenir Ideas Which Will Bring You Jealous Looks
So what are some souvenir ideas which aren’t going to end collecting dust, long forgotten and never to be shown or used?
You have to ask yourself first, what do you need a souvenir for in the first place? Is it to help you remember your trip, is it to make your vacation feeling last longer, is it just for show to make your friends jealous of the places you’ve been to?
Here I give you 6 souvenir ideas which will make your friends jealous and are useful and fun to bring back home as well.
1. Something For The Stomach
You eat, let me guess, three meals per day? Don’t lie to me, you eat at least twice a day, don’t you?
If you bring something consumable from your vacation, your experience will be prolonged beyond the 2 weeks you spent in an incredible resort (exploring secluded Dominican Republic beaches, maybe?).
The souvenir ideas here are endless:
You can pack a few unripe mangoes or pineapples and eat them within a few days of your return.
You can buy a pack of coffee or tea and enjoy it each morning in the next few weeks.
You can get a pack of snacks, nuts or dry fruits to munch in front of the TV in the evenings.
You can bring back some typical spices and mix them in your kitchen for the next month or so.
You can learn a few new dishes and use the recipes to impress your friends next time they visit you.
You can get a bottle of the local (alcohol) beverage and mix your friends or family a new drink.
Make sure you buy these items from a supermarket or a vendor, not a souvenir or tourist-oriented shop.
There’s no way something like this will end in your basement, right? It won’t even take up space on your shelves because it will be (sadly) gone in a while. Except for the recipes 😉
2. Something For The Outlook
I know I hinted t-shirts are stupid and widely found everywhere but hear me out.
I’m not talking about the souvenir shops t-shirts, hoodies or caps with “I HEART [input name of touristy place here]”. I’m talking about genuine typical clothes from the place you’ve visited:
Like the cool woollen cardigan I bought in Portugal.
Or t-shirts from a local brand which is not widely popular in your state.
Or a new pair of shoes, flip flops or sandals.
Or even a sexy negligee 😉
Or a piece of hand-made jewellery, not necessary something fancy or expensive.
You get the picture. Make sure you buy something which you’ll actually wear back home and not just hang in your wardrobe. A sombrero or a poncho might seem fun and a good souvenir idea at the time, but when exactly are you going to wear it?
Try to find a little boutique or even a shopping mall with local brands, don’t just go to the next souvenir shop near the beach, and chances are everyone back home will ask where you got your new piece of clothing or jewellery.
3. Something For The Everyday
I admit, buying a coffee mug or a ceramic pot is one of the most touristic souvenirs possible. But if you’re actually going to use them for your morning coffee or to serve snacks to your friends during the next party, why not?
There are a few things you should consider about these souvenir ideas:
Make sure they are authentic and not made in China with only the label being printed somewhere nearby.
Make sure the quality matches the price – those are some of the favourite tourist souvenirs and prices are usually based on the location of the shop and number of tourists passing by. Visit a few shops and compare prices before deciding. Best is to buy from a store where locals would buy, easiest is to just visit a big supermarket. Sometimes factories are a good option, other times they’re the biggest tourist traps. Don’t pay more than you might pay back home.
Are you really going to use that glass, cup, dish, pot? Or are the colours of the decoration hypnotising you? Is the seller too pushy? If you’re unsure, just walk away. If you still want to buy it the next day, just come back – they won’t run out of stock overnight.
We once bought a wine bottle stopper and although it’s not the prettiest souvenir or of very high quality, it serves its purpose and the memories it brings are invaluable to us.
Another time we brought a hammock back home – well, that’s something everyone who knows us is really jealous about! Of course, we had to carefully consider if it would fit on our balcony before purchasing it, so don’t be spontaneous with a souvenir idea like this.
4. Something For The Walls Of Your Home

A beautiful African scene, bought in Knysna, South Africa, from the incredible Peggy
Looking at the same pictures day after day in your home will make you ignore them after a while. They’ll stop serving their purpose.
So why not consider adding a few new ones or exchanging some of the old ones?
Here are a few souvenir ideas in this category for you:
Take lots of photos. Sort them well, choose the ones which make you most proud of or bring back the nicest memories. Printing them will only cost you a few cents, but the memories they’ll wake up each day from your walls are priceless.
Send yourself a postcard. Time it to arrive after you’ve come back from your vacation and it will feel like time travel. You can then pin the postcard somewhere around your home.
Buy a poster or a picture. Make sure you can transport it properly, you don’t want the disappointment of it being ruined when you unpack your luggage.
Bring only a picture frame. Sometimes a beautifully ornamented frame is much more fun to look at than the image it frames.
A mask you can hang e.g. over your couch is always something unusual and interesting to show to your friends. No matter if it’s a papier-mâché mask from Venice, a wooden carving from an African village or a Mexican lucha libre wrestler mask, they’re all eye-catching.
5. Something For Your Next Trip
Set your imagination free. What is it you need during a trip? Have you searched back home to buy a swimming suit in winter, or a ski mask in the middle of the hottest summer days?
It’s much easier to find what you need for a vacation once you’ve arrived at your destination.
A good book is very useful not only next time you travel but also at home. It doesn’t really matter if you pick up a book about your destination, its people or history, or a fiction novel. While you’re reading it, and even each time you look at it on the shelf, you’ll remember your vacation.
A gadget or utensils or a tool you always forget to pack or buy back home. This could be really anything, from a Swiss army knife to a belt, or a travel pillow, an adaptor, or a small flashlight, or a lighter.
Toiletries to either use at home or on your next vacation. In many countries, local cosmetics are much more affordable than at home. For example, aloe is widely used in many creams and lotions and you can find a large number of products on the Canary Islands, one of the biggest aloe growers.
A new pair of sunglasses, new bathing suit, swimming goggles, a ski mask, a beach towel or sarong – all products, which are only seasonally available back home, but you can always find at vacation destinations.

6. Something Priceless
Souvenirs are just a way to make us remember our travels. The sentimental value they have to us often exceeds their practical use or their actual price.
Sometimes it’s best not to buy anything but just to pick up something from a place you enjoyed:
a little stone from the Sahara desert;
a few seashells from a Caribbean beach;
a maple leaf from Canada;
a small container of sand from a tropical island;
several coins or banknotes from the local currency.
Even a matchbox from that place where you had the most delicious cocktail ever is an excellent souvenir idea.
Some Souvenir Ideas Might Actually Bring You Trouble Rather Than Jealous Looks
Whatever you decide to take with you, don’t forget that some items are actually forbidden to export or amounts are strictly regulated, so make sure you check each country’s regulations and you don’t end up in trouble.
Live or stuffed animals are not a good idea. Including corals (yes, they’re animals).
No hallucinogens. Only because it’s legal to smoke weed in your vacation destination, does not mean you can take some home, too.
Weapons, this goes without saying, are illegal to take on a plane, even in your checked in luggage. Even some knives will get you into a lot of trouble with the customs officers. Check the regulations at both your vacation’s and your home’s customs.
Alcohol, cigars and cigarettes are limited in amount.
Meat, fish, eggs and milk products are often not allowed to import. They will not only be confiscated if found, but you’ll also have to pay a fee.
Forged and fake items can get you into trouble with customs officers. You knew already that Gucci bag or that bargain watch were fake and the quality sucks, is it really worth the risk?
We all love remembering our trips and vacations.
Sometimes the photos we take don’t seem like enough memorabilia. We need to bring back home something we can hold, easily show off and put on display.
Don’t be that person, who buys the same crap everyone else buys, though.
A wooden penis-shaped figure might seem funny and like an excellent souvenir idea to bring back home after a few drinks, but are you really going to impress anyone with it? Or are you more likely going to embarrass yourself by putting it on display?
Better buy typical, authentic products, which help local producers and bring money into the country of your visit, rather than supporting cheap labour in Asian sweat shops.
Be a responsible consumer, this will make you stand out from the rest of the tourists, who don’t even remember the name of the last place they visited.
And will eventually make everyone jealous.
